Some people celebrate the unseasonably warm start to spring by donning flip flops and taking lunch outside to start working on their tan. Floral designers are a little less enthusiastic, because we know it means the season for spring flowers will be over before it really begins. 80-degree weather in March ushered in summer flowers, so it was just in the knick of time that we held our Spring Bulb workshop here at Royal Bloom. We procured some of the last daffodils, narcissus, and amaryllis of the year, along with tulips, which are available year-round. | A great time was had with the amazing ladies attending this month's Royal Bloom Workshop! We learned about true bulbs and the difference between bulbs and corms, rhizomes, and tubers. Students experienced hands-on how delicate bulb stems can be, and did a great job gingerly working with materials to create their own whimsical arrangements to take home. I splurged a little on the bulbs because I have a hard time passing up my favorites. They selected from a variety of tulips (parrot, French, double, fringed, standard), a hybrid ivory daffodil with peach center, a bright yellow daffodil, peachy pink hycinth, blue muscari, apricot amaryllis, and fragrant lily of the valley. They chose between two projects: a tall arrangement with a dramatic branch of blooming dogwood as it's structure, or a cheery patch of wheatgrass filled with "planted" bulbs. |

Repurposed oatmeal cartons become office organizers for chalk, charging cords, adhesives, etc.. Keeping the clutter contained and out of sight helps me to think clearly and be more productive! I look forward to it all year, but especially on days when my "three square meals" are; a granola bar I found in the glove box, a grande latte, and fun size snickers in the office candy dish. Days when I put together an outfit from whichever two items are on the top of the clean laundry pile that has been growing on my couch since last...er, month. I daydream about it on my drive to the flower market at 4 am, when I notice in the rearview mirror that I only put mascara on one eye, and I forgot my laptop at home. Those of you who live in the world of events will know what I'm talking about...in the middle of the chaos, I can't wait for...off season! Usually January-March, depending on the type of event service, you are regrouping from the Holidays and spending more time inside...where it's warm. Consequently, your event professionals are regrouping, too! Time for us to work on all the routine things 9-to-5'ers appear to keep up on throughout the year. File those reciepts, sort digital photos into albums, answer flagged emails, get the oil changed, doctor checkup, empty the box of paper clips (that I bought in May) into the paper clip organizer (yes, it's January), and grocery shop for goodness sake! It's also a good time to catch up on the blogs I like to "follow", and even post to my own blog if the winds are right! I love adding unexpected elements into my designs, so when I received the green light to incorporate feathers into Aren & Devin's wedding flowers, I did a little jig in my desk chair. The flowers worked seamlessly with the couple's stylish garden wedding at the historic Allied Arts Guild in Menlo Park. It's always a treat to witness the variety of good ideas that come out of our creative workshops! No exception today as the ladies scooped, layered, and arranged their lovely terrariums, some in apothocary jars, others in ultra-modern globes. No surprise my Terrarium has an Eiffel tower as the star... J'adore Paris!
I couldn't bear to see another orange and brown mum arrangement this fall, so here is how I found my respite from an overdone holiday rut. ; ) Still rich, deep and gracefully fading, as nature tends toward this time of year, but still giving Autumn her just due with romantic contrasts and unlikely textures.
And the "Steam Punk (in)"....well, I'm not sure where that one came from. But it happened. ; ) |
